TENSE TUESDAY: FUTURE IN THE PAST: meaning and examples

Hi, readers! Are you ready to do some time travel? For Tense Tuesday, we are looking at the FUTURE IN THE PAST. How is this possible?

With the construction WAS/WERE GOING TO, we look back at a time in the past but talk about how (at that time) we were looking at the future

Here are some examples:

Example 1
: By the time I left school, I knew I was going to be a doctor.

Example 2: Before I found a hotel with rooms, I was afraid we were going to sleep in the airport!

Example 3: Until I met my wife, I thought I was going to be single forever.

In each of these examples, we see what our future thoughts were at a point in the past. We use the Simple Past to say when these thoughts happened, and WAS/WERE GOING TO in order to show our future thoughts at that time.

To practice this a little, finish this sentence:

When I was 15, I . . .

Leave us your sentence on our Facebook page. Don't forget to use the construction WAS/WERE GOING TO in your answer!
