STATE OF THE ART: meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend.

Today's expression is: state of the art (adjective)

It means: the most modern or advanced techniques or methods; the highest degree of development of an art or technique at a particular time.

Example 1:
The company just changed their software and are now using a state-of-the-art system.

Example 2:
John and Anna installed fire- and police-alert equipment in their home that is state of the art.

Notice that in example one, we put hyphens between the words "state of the art." When we put a multi-word adjective before a noun, as in example one, we need to put hyphens between the words. In example two, the adjective phrase "police-alert" is another example.
