SAYING NO (2): meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope you had a good weekend.

Today we continue with our look at different expressions for saying 'no' in English, depending on the situation and how strong you want your 'no' to be. So far we have seen:

-I'm afraid not
(more polite)
-Not really (when something isn't important to us)

Today's first NO-expression is: I don't think so

Example 1:
Janet: Has Mr Burns come back from lunch yet?
Lisa: I don't think so. I haven't seen him.

You use this expression when you think you know something, but you are not completely sure. You can also use not as far as I know.

Example 2:
Janet: Has Mr Burns come back from lunch yet?
Lisa: Not as far as I know. I haven't seen him.

Today's second NO-expression is: Of course not

Example 2:
Bill: You didn't tell Hillary what I told you, did you?
George: Of course not. I'm your friend. I wouldn't do something like that.

We use of course not when we think what was asked is stupid or obvious.

We will finish up tomorrow by looking at two more expression.
