REIMBURSE: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today's word is: to reimburse

It means: to pay back money that someone has spent, especially for work-related expenses.

Example 1:
When I travel for my company I pay for everything and when I get back to the office I am reimbursed.

Example 2:
Don't worry, I will reimburse you for all of your expenses during the trip.

The use of this word is especially frequent in professional environments where employees often have to save receipts in order to be reimbursed later for money they have spent for the company.

The meaning of this word is very similar to pay back (a phrasal verb we looked at last week); the difference is that the person who does the "paying back" doesn't actually participate directly in the spending of the money, and the person who spends the money isn't spending it for themselves.
