Today's expression is: the man (and/or woman) in the street
Meaning: an average or ordinary person, either male or female.
Example 1:
Our political leaders often don't understand the views of the man in the street.
Example 2:
I think the average man or woman in the street doesn't fully understand the current financial crisis.
