JUMP-4: meaning and examples

Good morning once again.

Today we complete our review of expressions with the English word JUMP.

Today's 1st expression with JUMP is: to jump ship

Meaning: this expression originally meant to leave the ship on which you were serving, without permission. Today it can also mean to leave an organization or a company that you belong to, suddenly and unexpectedly.

Example 1:
The CEO of our Japanese affiliate jumped ship about a week ago, with no warning, which is why my boss has asked me to take over as CEO.

Today's 2nd expression with JUMP is: to keep/stay one jump ahead (of someone)

Meaning: to keep your advantage over someone, especially your competitors, by taking action before they do or by making sure you know more than they do.

Example 2:
Apple is able to stay one jump ahead of it competitors by constantly innovating and releasing new, very attractive products.
