FRUIT EXPRESSIONS-3: meaning and examples

Hello again.

Today we continue looking at common expressions that include the names of fruits in them.

Today's expression is: A rotten apple (rotten = podrido)

Meaning
: one bad person who has a bad effect on others in the group.

Example 1:
The CEO (chief executive officer) decided to fire the director of Human Resources. He was a rotten apple. His attitude and negativity was affecting the rest of the staff.

A related expression is to upset the apple cart, which means to cause problems for somebody or to spoil their plans, arrangements, etc.

Example 2:
He was a very progressive and independently-minded politician, until he was elected President of the Republic. Now he is so afraid of upsetting the apple cart that he acts just like all of the previous presidents.
