EXPRESSIONS WITH YEAR-2: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue celebrating the New Year with expressions that use the word year.

Today's expression is: year by year

Meaning: as time passes; used especially to talk about constant changes (increases or decreases).

Example 1:
Year by year there has been an increase in violence shown in the movies and on TV.

This is very similar to yesterday's expression (year after year), but here the emphasis is on the passing of time (and the changes that it brings), and not repetition over time.

Example 2:
Year by year their affection for each other grew stronger.

Have a good day.
