EXPRESSIONS WITH BUSINESS-3: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue our review of uses of the English word business.

Today's expression is: to get down to business.

Meaning: to start dealing with a matter that needs to be dealt with or to start doing the work that needs to be done.

Example 1:
Let's get down to business immediately. At 11 AM we can stop for coffee, but now we need to concentrate on our work.

Example 2:
I like the way that Janet works. She arrives at 8:55, boots up her computer, prepares a cup of coffee and gets down to business by 9:00. I wish the rest of the employees were as efficient as she is.
