EARTHLINGS: meaning and examples

Hello again everyone.

Today we are going to answer a question from one of our readers, Eva Giner. Here is her question:

Hola, Me gustaría saber qué significa exactamente: EARTHLINGS. Es un video sobre el maltrato animal que lo han traducido como "subordinados" ¿pero realmente quiere decir esto? Gracias, Eva

Today's word is: Earthling

Meaning: a word used in Science Fiction stories by creatures from other planets to refer to people living on earth. Earthling is, then, an inhabitant of the earth (terrícola in Spanish).

Example 1:
Martian: Earthlings, take me to your leader.

A direct translation to Spanish would not normally be subordinado, but depending on the context it could be an appropriate translation. In the example, where Martians invade earth, we might consider the earthlings subordinates. I'm not sure what the context was in Eva's video, but it might be logical. Translation usually leaves room for some interpretation.

I hope this answers your question Eva.
