Good morning.

Hoy seguimos mirando algunas de las diferencias gramaticales entre el inglés estadounidense y el inglés británico.

Para expresar una falta de obligación, el inglés británico escoge needn't y el inglés estadounidense se prefiere don't need to.

We have plenty of money; we needn't ask for a loan. (UK)
We have plenty of money; we don't need to ask for a loan. (US)
(Tenemos bastante dinero; no necesitamos pedir un préstamo.)

En el inglés británico se puede usar el auxiliar DO para sustituir el verbo después de un auxiliar, sin embargo esto no ocurre en el inglés estadounidense.

US
-Will you go to the party?
-I may. I haven't decided yet.

UK
-Will you go to the party?
-I may do. I haven't decided yet.
(¿Irás a al fiesta? Quizá sí. No lo he decidido todavía.)

Hay variaciones en los usos de las preposiciones en las dos variedades estándares.

They arrived at ten after three (3:10). US
They arrived at ten past three (3:10). UK
(Llegaron a las tres y diez.)

How many people were in the course? US
How many people were on the course? UK
(¿Cuántas personas estuvieron en el curso?)

My mother came over to see us. US
My mother came round to see us. UK
(Mi madre vino a vernos.)

También hay diferencias en el uso de los artículos.

My father is in the hospital. US
My father is in hospital. UK
(Mi padre está (ingresado) en el hospital.)

My mother plays piano. US
My mother plays the piano. UK
(Mi madre toca el piano.)
