CHAIN-1: meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope you had a good weekend.

This week we are going to look at some uses of and expressions with the English word CHAIN.

The most common meaning of chain (cadena) is a series of connected metal rings, used for pulling or fastening things.

Example 1:
He wore a heavy gold chain around his neck.

Today's meaning of CHAIN is: a group of shops, stores or hotels owned by the same company.

Example 2:
His family owns a large chain of supermarkets in Spain. They are very wealthy people.

Example 3:
Is that chain of clothing outlets made up of privately owned franchises, or are they owned by one company?
