BREAK-6: meaning and examples

Hello again everyone.

Today we continue our look at different uses of and expressions with the English word break.

Today's expression is: to break up

Meaning 1: to separate into smaller pieces.

Example 1:
The ship broke up on the rocks and sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

Meaning 2: to come to an end.


Example 2
After 15 years together, their marriage has broken up. It really is a shame. They seemed so happy.

Example 3
The meeting broke up at around 12:00 o'clock.
