BODY EXPRESSIONS WITH HAND (2): meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue with our expressions that use the word hand. Today's expression is similar to yesterday's expression, but with a different meaning in the right context.

Today's Expression is: to give a (big) hand

It means: to clap your hands to show that you have enjoyed a performance.

(In case you didn't know, the verb "clap" means aplaudir, and it's what we do when we approve of a performance that we've seen.)

Example 1
Thank you for coming tonight, ladies and gentlemen. And now, let's give a big hand to all of the people who helped make this event possible.

Example 2
I was surprised when the crowd gave him a hand; he really didn't do anything interesting.
