Today's expression is: to stand alone
Meaning 1: to be independent or not connected with other people, organizations or ideas.
Example 1:
Some say that this island is too small to stand alone as an independent state, but I think it would survive very well independently.
Meaning 2: to not be near other objects or buildings
Example 2:
Our house once stood alone on the outskirts of the city; however, with the recent growth, we are now surrounded by many other buildings.
