BUSINESS EXPRESSIONS ABOUT CHANGING PLANS: 'PUT SOMETHING ON THE BACKBURNER': meaning and examples

Hello everyone!

This week we have been talking about business expressions. As you may have noticed, all these expressions (most phrasal verbs) have been about doing something later. Today's expression is the same! We are learning the expression TO PUT SOMETHING ON THE BACK BURNER

Definition: to postpone something that is not so important. If something is on the back burner, it is temporarily not being dealt with or considered, especially because it is not urgent or important.

Example 1: Don’t worry about writing the new training manual: we still have the old one from last year. We can put that project on the back burner

Example 2: We wanted to renovate the office, but we’ve put that on the back burner for now. We have to focus our money on sales and marketing.

This expression comes from cooking: cooks place pots and pans on the back burner and move things that need to be cooked now to the front burners, so they can focus on cooking those things first.

That's all for our week of business expressions. I hope that you learned some useful phrases.

Have a great weekend!
