WIN vs. EARN

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. 

Today we will consider two more verbs that often cause confusion amongst students of English: win and earn.

Win means: to defeat everyone else in a competition, which may include receiving a prize.

Example 1
Whenever I play ping pong with my wife, she always wins; I haven't beat her in 3 years.

Example 2
The Spanish football team won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympic games.

Earn means: to receive money for work that you do.

Example 3
Despite continuing inflation, many workers continue to earn the same salary as always.

You CANNOT say ***I win a lot of money at my job.***
