WEDDINGS (2): meaning and examples

Hello again,

Today's Daily Vitamin is about the different traditions and events associated with getting engaged.

An engagement party is a celebration held when a couple gets engaged. The engagement ring is, traditionally, the ring a man buys for a woman, symbolising his love for her. It may have precious stones, such as diamonds.

The word wedding refers to the whole event on the day the couple gets married. This includes the ceremony and the celebration held afterwards.

The act of getting married is performed in either a civil or religious ceremony, meaning it is conducted by a secular official or a religious minister, respectively.

After the ceremony, there is usually a reception, a meal and party to celebrate the marriage.

Example 1:
Speaker 1: Did you go to Bill and Jane's engagement party?
Speaker 2: Yes, it was great. We had cocktails and a buffet and there was a really good DJ, so everyone danced all night. Jane was wearing her engagement ring, a single diamond.

Example 2:
Speaker 1: What kind of wedding are they planning?
Speaker 2: Jane wants a civil ceremony, followed by a reception at her parents' house.
