TO SWEAR (3): meaning and examples

Good morning.

We will finish up our Daily Vitamins about the verb to swear by looking at a few expressions.

Expression 1: to swear by

Meaning: to believe that something is effective.

Example 1:
My father-in-law swears by whiskey as a cure for a cold. However, I've tried drinking whiskey when I have a cold and all it does is make me drunk.

Expression 2: to swear in

Meaning: when someone gives a formal promise in a court of law or at an official political ceremony.

Example 2:
George W. Bush was sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States.

Expression 3: to swear to

Meaning: to be completely certain of something.

Example 3:
I can't swear to it, but I think I saw Felipe yesterday. Isn't he supposed to be in Africa?
