TO MISS-4: meaning and examples

Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.

Today is the fourth day we are looking at different meanings and uses of the verb to miss. This time, we consider the meaning to escape or avoid something that is unpleasant or uncomfortable.

Example 1
I drive for more than an hour every morning to get to work. I leave at 5:00 a.m. in order to miss a lot of traffic.

In example 1, the speaker leaves early so there won't be as much traffic. She misses the heavy traffic.

Example 2
I narrowly missed being given a prison sentence for a crime I didn't commit.

In this example, the speaker avoids going to prison (with the help of a good lawyer?).
