TO MAKE OUT: meaning and examples

Today's Phrasal Verb is: TO MAKE OUT

Like most phrasal verbs, it has more than one meaning, depending on the context. Today we are going to look at three meanings. 

Today's 1st meaning is: to perceive or understand

We use it when we are trying to understand something that may be difficult to discern. See the following examples.

Example 1: I can't make out what you are saying with all the noise. Can you turn down the music, please?

Example 2: It was too dark to make out the sign.

Today's 2nd meaning is: To manage or fare.

This meaning is used to express how someone or something is doing in a situation. See the following examples.

Example 3: How did you make out on your exam?

Example 4: We made out okay during the storm. 

Today's 3rd meaning is: To kiss and caress passionately.

This is a more colloquial meaning, often used to refer to kissing or intimate physical contact. In Spanish in Spain, we use the expression "darse el lote."

Example 5: They were making out in the park.

Example 6: We could hear them making out in the next room.
