TENSE TUESDAY: THE SIMPLE PAST PASSIVE: meaning and examples

Welcome to our first Tense Tuesday of the year, vitamineros. For this week's lesson, we are looking at the Simple Past Passive

The construction of the Simple Past Passive is as follows:

subject was/were past participle (by agent)

Example 1: The house was remodelled by the previous owners.

Example 2: The grammar lessons were given at the beginning of class, but since I was late, I missed them.

Example 3: The pyramids were built by the Egyptians.

We use the Simple Past Passive to talk about things that were completed in the past when we're more interested in the action than the agent of the action. To practice this construction, can you answer the following questions in the passive?

1. When was your house built?
2. Who gave you your favourite Christmas gift?

If you'd like to practice the Simple Past Passive, give us the answers to the questions on our Facebook page. We will be happy to give you feedback about your answers.

That's all for today. As always, thanks for reading! Have a wonderful day!
