TENSE TUESDAY: THE MODAL 'SHALL'
TENSE TUESDAY: THE MODAL 'SHALL': meaning and examples
For today's Tense Tuesday we are looking at an interesting MODAL VERB: SHALL. We first looked at this modal verb back in January of 2006. You can see that lesson at the following link.
https://www.ziggurat.es/es/lecciones_ingles/index.asp?rs=shall
We use this modal in many different ways, depending on the context. For example, it can be used to talk about the future.
Example 1: I shall see you at 10.
We can use it to make suggestions, especially in question form.
Example 2: Shall we dance?
And we can use it to volunteer or promise something in the future.
Example 3: I shall never lie to you.
This is a formal modal, and is used less than other modals, but it can be quite useful. Note that it is more common in British English than in American English.
That's all for today. I shall see you tomorrow for Wordy Wednesday!
Until then, take care.
