TELEPHONE ENGLISH-5 (MAKING THE CONNECTION): meaning and examples
Good morning everybody.
Today's Daily Vitamin continues with useful
telephone expressions in English. We have looked at expressions for:
Greetings, Asking to Speak to Other People, and
Identifying Yourself. Today we are going to learn some expressions for
connecting calls. Like the other expressions that we have seen for telephoning, these are very
formulaic and eventually need to be memorised.
CONNECTING CALLS
Workplace (Formal)
When you call an office, the receptionist will probably have to
put your call through. She or He may use one of the following expressions to tell you to wait for the connection:

One moment please while I put you on hold.
I'll put your call through to NAME.
I'll connect you to NAME.
I'll see if NAME is available to take your call.
More Complete Examples (Formal):

One moment please. I'll see if the Director is available to take your call.
At Home (Informal)
Some more informal expressions for asking a person to wait to be connected, or to wait for a person to come to the phone, are:
Hang on a moment.
Hold on.
Just a minute.
I'll see if NAME can come to the phone.
Let me see if NAME is around.
More Complete Examples (Informal):
