TEENAGER: meaning and examples

Good morning.

In English the numbers 13 through 19 end in -teen (thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen and nineteen). That's why it's quite common to refer to young people of these ages as teenagers or teens.

Example 1:
Most teenagers don't get on well with their parents.

Example 2:
My sister has two teenaged daughters.

We often use the synonym adolescent, especially in more formal environments.

Example 3:
Adolescent girls are generally more mature than adolescent boys.
