SHORT EXPRESSIONS-4: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue looking at some expressions that use the word short in them.

Today's expression is: to draw the short straw (especially in UK)

In the US it is generally more common to say to get the short end of the stick.

Meaning: to be chosen to do a difficult or unpleasant task or to suffer the bad effects of a situation in general.

Example 1:
I drew the short straw and had to clean the toilets.

Example 2:
The people who get the short end of the stick are those whose income is too high to qualify for help from the government, but who barely have enough money to pay for their basic necessities.
