PICK UP THE TAB (IT'S ON ME): meaning and examples

Today we will look at two informal expressions that are used when someone pays the bill (usually in a restaurant or bar).

Expression 1: to pick up the tab

It means: to pay the bill in a restaurant or bar.

Example 1:
I was very surprised when I went to dinner with Helen. I consider myself a fairly modern man, but I didn't expect her to pick up the tab on the first date!

Expression 2: It's on me

Meaning: the person who says it intends to pay the total.

Example 2:
Matthew: Helen...please put your money away. I'll pick up the tab.
Helen: No, no! The meal is on me. I insist!
