PHRASAL VERBS WITH SQUASH ('SQUASH UP'): meaning and examples

Welcome back and happy Monday, everyone! How was your weekend? I hope it was fantastic. 

This week our theme is Phrasal Verbs with the word "Squash." You may know the word SQUASH as the vegetable. But it is also a verb that means "to flatten" or "to suppress." For example, we can say we "squash" an insect when we kill it (=to flatten) or that a government "squashes" a demonstration (=to supress). In any case, this week we will look at different phrasal verbs with this word.

We begin with the phrasal verb: TO SQUASH UP

Definition: To move closer together. 

Example 1: Can you guys squash up to make room for one more person?

Example 2: We had to squash up to fit in the lift. 

This phrasal verb with today's meaning is INTRANSITIVE. It is more common in the UK than in American English.
