MORE HAND EXPRESSIONS-1: meaning and examples
I received a request to cover English expressions that use the word hand in them, so this week we will learn some. However, I should point out that in May of 2006, we did a series of body expressions with hand; so you may want to go back and look at those too.
Today's expression is: by hand
Meaning: by a persona rather than a machine.
Example 1:
The fabric was quite expensive; that's because it was painted by hand.
Example 2:
The shoes were sewn by hand in the Third World, so she decided not to buy them. She was afraid they may have been made using childhood labour.
ALTERNATIVE MEANING: The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary points out that if a letter is delivered by hand, it is delivered directly by a messenger or the person who wrote it and not by the post office.
Example 3:
That is so sweet. He delivered the invitation to you by hand. I think he likes you.
