MODALS FOR NECESSITY (MUSN'T): meaning and examples

Hello everyone, I hope you are having an excellent day.

Today's lesson is a bit shorter than the previous lessons, since we will only focus on the negative of Must.

Example 1 (affirmative obligation):
I must go to work in the morning.

Remember, Must is never followed by "to".

The negative of must is must not or mustn't

Example 2 (negative obligation):
I must not go to work in the morning. (Because of the pandemic, my boss has asked me to work from home.)

Example 3:
I mustn't call Anne. (Because she is ill, and I don't want to bother her.)

Remember, the modal verb don't have to is not the same as mustn't. Don't have to indicates a lack of obligation, and must not/mustn't indicates negative obligation.

If you have any questions about this difference, please post them on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter) and we will answer them as soon as possible.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
