MATTER (noun): meaning and examples

Hello again. Welcome to another Daily Vitamin lesson.

Today's word is the very useful noun, matter. (In another lesson, we will look at the verb to matter.)

The noun matter can refer to many different things:
-a subject which is being dealt with or considered (example 1)
-a problem or a bad situation (example 2)
-a substance (example 3)
-when time is short (example 4)

It is quite common in normal conversation and is a word that is not generally taught in traditional English coursebooks.

Example 1: Many feel that world hunger is a matter which needs to be addressed by the politicians of the world.

Example 2: What's the matter? You seem quite sad today.

Example 3: Humans are made up of organic matter, 70 percent of which is water.

Example 4: The meeting is going to start in a matter of minutes; where is John?

I hope you have a good day!
