INTERNET SEARCH: meaning and examples

Good morning again.

Today we answer a query from one of our Daily Vitamin readers, Sara. Here is her question.

What verb is better when I want to say 'search on the Internet': 'consult' or 'look it up'? I know 'look it up' is usually used when you search for some information in a book but in Spanish we use "consult" for the internet and I don't know if it is correct in English."

Today's expression is: TO SEARCH FOR something on the Internet

It means: to look for something on the Internet.

Example 1:
She spent several hours searching for information on the Internet about which brand of television to buy.

You can also say: TO DO AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR information

Example 2:
Let's do an Internet search for information about those authors.

Thank you very much for your questions, Sara. As you can see, we don't use the verb TO CONSULT in this context, but you could say "Let's look it up on the Internet." However, it is probably more common to use the verb SEARCH. In fact, Google, Yahoo, etc. are also referred to as search engines, since they help you to search for things on the Internet.

I hope we've answered your question; if you have any doubts, please let us know.

Have a great day!
