IDIOMS WITH 'WIN' (PLAY TO WIN) : meaning and examples

Welcome back, everyone, and Happy Valentine's Day to those who are celebrating!

If you'd like some love-related expressions, check the Daily Vitamin archives. We have many lessons related to LOVE during February of past years. Just put "love" in the search box in the Daily Vitamin section on our website (https://www.ziggurat.es/lecciones_ingles).

This week, however, we are celebrating the 2018 Winter Olympics and looking at Idioms with "Win." Today we are looking at the expression TO PLAY TO WIN.

Definition: To make a special effort to achieve success, to reach a goal, or to negotiate successfully.

Example 1: I know I didn't have to buy your mother such an expensive birthday gift, but I really want her to like me. I'm playing to win.

Example 2: You bought another house? Wow you're serious about becoming a real estate investor! You're really playing to win.

As you can see, this expression is very similar to yesterday's expression, TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT.

That's all for today. Thank you for reading! We will see you tomorrow.
