CRACK-1: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

Today I want to begin a series of Daily Vitamins about the word CRACK, and we will include some common expressions that we use with this word.

CRACK is often used incorrectly in Spanish as a noun to mean "someone who is very good at something". It is not used this way in English, although in conversation it can be used as an adjective to describe a noun, meaning "expert and highly trained; excellent at something." Consider the following example.

Example 1:
That guy hunts a lot. They say he is a crack shot; that is, he is accurate and skilled at shooting.

However, we CANNOT say "**he is a crack**" or "**he is a crack at shooting**".

Crack
as a noun means "a line on the surface of something where it has broken but not split."

Example 2:
Be careful. Your wine glass has a crack in it.

Crack is often used as a verb and means "to break without dividing into separate parts; to break something in this way."

Example 1:
I hit the wine glass on the edge of the sink and cracked it. Darn it!

I hope that's clear.

Tomorrow we will begin to look at some expressions with CRACK. Until then, I hope you have a great day.
