Today's expression with break is: to break down
This expression has various meanings, today we will look at two of the most common ones. Tomorrow we will look at two more.
Meaning 1: to stop working because of a fault (when speaking about machines or vehicles).
Example 1:
The telephone system in the office has broken down again. Maybe it would be easier to simply buy everyone a mobile phone.
Example 2:
Our car broke down on the way to Paris and we arrived at the meeting three hours late!
Meaning 2: to fail (when negotiating).
Example 3:
The negotiations between the two governments have broken down. They may never reach an agreement.
