THE MODAL ‘MUST’: DEDUCTION: meaning and examples

Welcome back, readers!

We are continuing our week about the modal verb MUST. Today we are looking at using MUST for DEDUCTION. DEDUCTION is when we are certain about something because of the information we have. 

Example 1: You ran a marathon yesterday? You must be so tired!

Example 2: His sister went to culinary school, so she must be a great cook. 

Example 3: My dad's car is in the garage. He must be home. 

Example 4: It's snowing outside. It must be really cold. 

Example 5: I didn't see Jim at work. He must be sick.
