THEME THURSDAY: 'AS...AS' EXPRESSIONS (AS MAD AS A HATTER): meaning and examples

Welcome to today's Theme Thursday everyone!

As you know, this month we are looking at AS...AS EXPRESSIONS. So far we have looked at the idioms AS COOL AS A CUCUMBER, AS BUSY AS A BEE and AS RIGHT AS RAIN. Our final expression of the month is AS MAD AS A HATTER.

Definition: crazy, insane.

Example 1: He became as mad as a hatter when he lost his keys. 

Example 2: My neighbour is as mad as a hatter. He's always yelling at us!

According to Wikipedia, this expression comes from how crazy hatters (people who made hats) became over time due to exposure to mercury used in hat-making. You can read more about it here:
