WILDCAT STRIKE: meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Over the next few days we are going to look at the word strike. Strike can be a verb or a noun and has different meanings and uses; there are quite a few expressions that have strike in them.

Today's expression is: wildcat strike

Meaning: a strike that happens suddenly and without the official support of a trade union.

Example 1:
Spain declared a "state of alarm" on Saturday for the first time since returning to democracy in response to a wildcat strike by air traffic controllers that had closed air traffic at the start of one of the year’s biggest holiday weekends.

Example 2:
The union has voted to strike for a pay increase of 7%. However, before the unions had planned the strike, the workers instigated a wildcat strike.
