WORDY WEDNESDAY: TO FLATTER: meaning and examples

Hi, everyone! Welcome to Wordy Wednesday.

Today we are looking at the verb TO FLATTER. This is a common word in English and today we are going to look at three of its definitions.

Definition 1: to give insincere praise or compliments to someone, usually to further your own interests. 


Example 1: He kept trying to flatter her during the interview. I don't know if that will help him get the job. 

Example 2: They said they loved the cake, but I think they were just flattering me. 

Definition 2: to give a favourable impression of something. 

Example 3: That shirt really flatters your figure. 

Definition 3: to make someone feel honoured and pleased. 

Example 4: I am flattered to receive the "Employee of the Month" award. 

That's a pretty interesting variety of definitions!
