EXPRESSIONS WITH FOOL-1

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a nice weekend.

This week we are going to study expressions with the word FOOL.

Today's expression is: to fool around

Meaning 1: to waste time instead of doing something that you should be doing.

Example 1:
Could you guys stop fooling around please? We have lots of work to do and we don't have much time.

Meaning 2: to have a sexual relationship with another person's partner; to have a sexual relationship with someone who is not your partner.

Example 2:
Rich is really upset. He just found out that his wife has been fooling around with his best friend, who is also a married man.

Hoy terminamos nuestra serie de Essential Weekly Vitamins sobre expresiones con la palabra BET.

Today's expression is: A good / safe bet
(La expresión de hoy es: una buena opción / opción u opuesta segura.)

Meaning: said about something that is likely to happen, to succeed or to be suitable or appropriate.
(Significado: se dice de aquello que es probable que suceda, tenga éxito, sea adecuado o apropiado.)

Example 1:
Lisa: What should I get David for his birthday?
(¿Qué debería comprar a David para su cumpleaños?)
Janet: Something technological is a safe bet; you know... a mobile, a tablet or something like that.
(Algo tecnológico es una opción segura; ya sabes...un móvil, una tableta o algo así.)

Example 2:
It's a good bet that Mike will be named the new CEO of the company. He has been working here for years, he's got everyone's respect, he knows the business well and people like him.
(Es una apuesta/opción segura que Mike sea nombrado el nuevo Director General de la empresa. Lleva años trabajando aquí, todos le respetan, conoce bien el negocio y cae bien a la gente.)

Good morning everyone.

Today we finish our study of expressions with the word BOTTOM.

Today's expression is: at bottom

Meaning: used to say what someone or something is really like; in reality.

Example 1:
Jealousy is, at bottom, a lack of self-confidence.

Example 2:
They knew at bottom that they were only deceiving themselves about the new CEO; he was just as bad, or worse, than the previous CEO.

Today we look at another expression with the word BOTTOM.

Today's expression is: the bottom drops/falls out of something

Meaning: people stop buying or using the products of a particular industry.

Example 1:
With the current crisis, the bottom has fallen out of the travel market.

Example 2:
When they lost the game, the bottom fell out of their hopes to make the playoffs.

Today we continue with our study of expressions with the word BOTTOM.

Today's expression is: to bottom out

Meaning: to stop getting worse.

Example 1:
According to some experts, the economic recession is finally beginning to show signs of bottoming out. Let's hope it's true!

Example 2:
All of his health problems seem to have bottomed out; they can't get much worse and he's actually feeling better. His wife is very pleased.
