Hoy terminamos nuestra serie de Daily Vitamins sobre expresiones con la palabra MARKET.

Today's expression is
: to play the market
(La expresión de hoy es: jugar al alza / invertir en acciones)

Meaning: to buy and sell stocks in order to make a profit.
(Significado: comprar y vender acciones para ganar dinero.)

Example 1:
I would rather play the market than put my money in the bank.
(Preferiría jugar al alza que poner mi dinero en el banco.)

Example 2:
I've finally learned my lesson playing the market; I lost a fortune. From now on I'm going to leave my money in a bank.
(Por fin he aprendido mi lección jugando al alza invertiendo en acciones; he perdido una fortuna. A partir de ahora voy a dejar mi dinero en el banco.)

Good morning again everyone.

Today we conclude our series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the word SALT.

Today's expression is: worth one's salt

It means: someone who is efficient and capable and who deserves respect.

Example 1:
The new CEO is not worth her salt. When is the board of directors going to get rid of her?

Example 2:
Janet. We have decided that you are worth your salt and we would like you to stay in the company as our assistant marketing director. Will you accept?

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Hello again everyone.

Today we continue with another expression with the word SALT.

Today's expression is: the salt of the earth

It means: a very good and honest person that you can always depend on.

Example 1:
My neighbour is the salt of the earth. He is always prepared to help you when you need him.

Example 2:
Jack's aunt is the salt of the earth. She has four children of her own and yet she also fosters three others.

Tomorrow we will look at one final SALT expression.

Good morning again everyone.

Today we continue with our series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the word SALT.

Today's expression is: to take something with a pinch/grain of salt

It means: to be careful about believing that something is completely true.

Example 1:
He doesn't always tell the truth. You should take what he says with a pinch of salt.

Example 2:
I was telling them the truth, but they took my presentation with a grain of salt. I don't think they believed my data about projected sales in Asia.

EXPRESSIONS WITH SALT-1

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning everyone.

Back in March of 2005 we did a Daily Vitamin about the expression to rub salt into the wound (to make a difficult situation even worse for someone). You can review that Daily Vitamin here:

This week we are going to look at more expressions with the word SALT.

Today's expression is: to salt something away

It means: to save something for the future secretly, sometimes dishonestly.

Example 1:
The CEO salted away all the company's profits in foreign bank accounts.

Example 2:
Every month I try to salt some money away for my retirement, but it's not easy.
