LEARNING TIPS: ENGLISH IN THE SUMMER

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning.

Tomorrow's Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking learners of English will be the last Daily Vitamin until Monday, September 17th. Therefore, today I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage you to make a plan to stay in contact with English this summer.

If you are a Ziggurat student or are registered for the ZigSpace, these months might be a good time to:
  1. Review and revise the more than 1700 Daily Vitamins that we have created since October 2003.
  2. Listen to the Daily Vitamin sound files on our website, to improve your pronunciation and listening skills.
  3. Do some of the 90 monthly activity packs that we have created, which will help you to consolidate the content covered for each month.
Some time ago I had a student return from summer holidays with a stronger level than when he left. (This is a true story!) During the summer he read in English, watched films and DVDs in English and went to Scotland with his family (among other things). There is no reason not to improve your English in the summer.

For some suggestions (in Spanish) about how to stay in contact with English in the summer, see the document at the following link:

We also encourage you to browse the resources section of our website at the following link:

Have a great summer and we'll see you on September 17th!

SUMMER CLASSICS (3)

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning!

For our final summer classic song, we move up a couple of decades to the 1980s (when men singers did not have sideboards!) for this classic from Bryan Adams. And no, nobody has a crazy beard in this video!

"Summer of '69"
(Bryan Adams)

To watch a video of this song, you can go to the following YouTube link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f06QZCVUHg

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
Was the summer of '69

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit, Jody got married
Shoulda known, we'd never get far

Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I'd always want to be there
Those were the best days of my life

Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenings down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you

Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Oh yeah
Back in the summer of '69
Ohhh

Man we were killin' time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothin' can last forever, forever, no

And now the times are changin'
Look at everything that's come and gone
Sometimes when I play that old six-string
Think about you wonder what went wrong

Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Oh yeah
Back in the summer of '69
Un-huh
It was the summer of '69, oh yeah
Me and my baby in '69, oh
It was the summer, the summer, summer of '69

I hope these great summer classics have put you in the mood for summer.

Tomorrow we will talk about some learning tips so that your English stays fresh during the summer holidays.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

SUMMER CLASSICS (2)

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning!

Here is another classic summer song from 1966. What does it have in common with yesterday's song by Mungo Jerry apart from the topic of summer? Sideboards (or sideburns in US English)! Sideboards are the hair that grows down the sides of a man's face in front of his ears.

"Summer In The City" THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL
(John Sebastian - Mark Sebastian - Steve Boone)

You can watch the video of this song at the following YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbQK-w2ARsw

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

See you tomorrow, with a final summer classic!

Enjoy your day!

SUMMER CLASSICS (1)

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning,

For this last week of Daily Vitamins before summer, we are going to post links to some classic summer songs. It was hard to choose because there are so many great summer songs, but hopefully these ones will help get you in the mood for your holidays. Let's start with a foot-tapping classic from 1970.

"In The Summertime" by MUNGO JERRY
(Ray Dorsey)

You can watch the video of the song at the following YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGorlIyOMss

In the summertime when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton or a ton an' twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by

We're no threat, people
We're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather's fine
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
We're always happy
Life's for livin' yeah, that's our philosophy

Sing along with us
Dee dee dee-dee dee
Dah dah dah-dah dah
Yeah we're hap-happy
Dah dah-dah
Dee-dah-do dee-dah-do dah-do-dah
Dah-do-dah-dah-dah
Dah-dah-dah do-dah-dah

Alright ah
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh Chh chh-chh

When the winter's here, yeah it's party time
Bring your bottle, wear your bright clothes
It'll soon be summertime
And we'll sing again
We'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down
If she's rich, if she's nice
Bring your friends and we'll all go into town

Let us know if you have any questions about this song or the lyrics.

Have a great day!
