STRIKE UP SOMETHING WITH SOMEONE

Hello again.

Today we finish our review of expressions that have the word strike in them. Today is also the last Daily Vitamin until Monday, January 10th 2011.

Today's expression is: to strike up something (with someone)

Meaning: to begin a friendship, relationship, conversation, etc.

Example 1:
My brother is not timid at all! He often strikes up conversations with complete strangers.

Example 2:
struck up a friendship with Paul while we were on a business trip together. Over the years we have become best friends.

STRIKE IT RICH

Hello again.

Today we continue our look at expressions with the word strike.

Today's expression is: to strike it rich (informal)

Meaning: to get a lot of money suddenly or unexpectedly.

Example 1:
While cleaning some oyesters, he found a giant pearl inside one of them. He struck it rich!

Example 2:
Many people waste time and money playing the lottery, thinking they are going to strike it rich, instead of creating a logical plan to become financially independent.

STRIKE A DEAL

Good morning.

Today we continue our look at expressions with the word strike.

Today's expression is: to strike a deal

Meaning: to make an agreement with someone in which both sides have an advantage.

Example 1:
The unions and management argued for a long time, but finally they struck a deal, so the strike was called off.

Example 2:
They were unable to strike a deal, so the meeting ended abruptly.

WILDCAT STRIKE

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Over the next few days we are going to look at the word strike. Strike can be a verb or a noun and has different meanings and uses; there are quite a few expressions that have strike in them.

Today's expression is: wildcat strike

Meaning: a strike that happens suddenly and without the official support of a trade union.

Example 1:
Spain declared a "state of alarm" on Saturday for the first time since returning to democracy in response to a wildcat strike by air traffic controllers that had closed air traffic at the start of one of the year’s biggest holiday weekends.

Example 2:
The union has voted to strike for a pay increase of 7%. However, before the unions had planned the strike, the workers instigated a wildcat strike.

Esta semana acabamos nuestro repaso de algunos servicios gratuitos de calidad que pueden encontrarse en la web.

PodCasts
El MP3, MP4 y el iPod han sido algunas de las últimas revoluciones tecnológicas que permiten al usuario descargar música y video de la red. A través de estas tecnologías se pueden obtener listenings para mejorar la comprensión oral.

¿Cómo encontrar un podcast sobre temas variados en inglés?
1. Entrar en el programa iTunes
(se puede descargar gratis en www.apple.com/es/itunes/)
2. Ir a iTunes Store
3. Seleccionar PODCASTS en la columna de la izquierda
4. Marcar BÚSQUEDA AVANZADA en la columna de la derecha
5. Cuando se abra la ventana, se debe marcar el ámbito que interesa (art, architecture, economy, coaching) en la casilla DESCRIPCIÓN y a continuación clicar en BUSCAR
6. Finalmente, en la parte inferior de la página del programa se obtendrán variedad de podcasts gratuitos sobre el tema escogido

Además, se pueden encontrar páginas web con recursos online para disfrutar de ellos desde casa. Por ejemplo, en el blog English for Spanish People pueden descargarse podcasts sobre deportes, ciudades, canciones, vocabulario... unidos a sus transcripciones. También existe Podictionary (http://podictionary.com/), un diccionario donde cada día se puede aprender la historia de una palabra. El texto está escrito en la web y junto a él aparece un link con el listening correspondiente al texto.

English as a Second Language Podcast (ESLP) (http://www.eslpod.com/) y ELT Podcast (http://www.eltpodcast.com/) también ofrecen la posibilidad de mejorar las habilidades de comprensión oral de aquellas personas interesadas en aprender inglés. En su web se hayan variedad de podcast de temas variados (relationships, business, daily life, travel…) con los transcripts.
