PRESENT PERFECT: DURATION FROM THE PAST UNTIL NOW

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Hi, everyone! Happy Friday.

Today is our last lesson about the Present Perfect; we are looking at using this tense for talking about the DURATION OF AN ACTIVITY FROM THE PAST UNTIL NOW

We use this to show that something started in the past and is continuing until now. If we indicate the amount of time the activity or situation has existed, we use the following prepositional clauses to clarify:

FOR + period of time (e.g., two weeks, three days, four years, etc.)

SINCE + point of time in the past (1996, yesterday, Saturday, etc.)

Example 1: I have been with this company for 2 years

Example 2: He has loved Mayte since he was a child

Example 3: They have had that car for almost 20 years.

How long have you worked at your current job? Tell us on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter).

That's it for this week! Thank you for reading. Have a wonderful weekend!

PRESENT PERFECT: MULTIPLE ACTIONS AT DIFFERENT TIMES

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Welcome back, everyone!

This week we are looking at some of the many uses of the Present Perfect. Today we are learning how to use this tense for MULTIPLE ACTIONS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. We use this to show that something has happened in the past, repeatedly

Example 1: I have lived in many different parts of this city.

Example 2: He has taken this test four times and failed all 4 times.

Example 3: They have hosted many celebrities at their 5-star hotel.

Example 4: He has interviewed Michael Jordan 3 times.

How many houses have you lived in during your lifetime? Tell us on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter), and please use the Present Perfect. You can use a specific number or you can use a quantifier, such as "many."

PRESENT PERFECT: ACCOMPLISHMENTS

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Happy Tuesday, everyone! I hope you're enjoying your week.

This week we are looking at some of the many ways we use the Present Perfect. Today we are looking at using this tense for ACCOMPLISHMENTS

We use the Present Perfect to talk about accomplishments of individual people or accomplishments of humanity

Example 1: Our daughter has graduated with honours.

Example 2: His mom has learned to walk again after suffering a terrible accident.

Example 3: Scientists have discovered a new cure for an aggressive cancer.

Example 4: Doctors have found a new way to treat mental illness.

Example 5: The organization has convinced the government to change laws to protect the environment.

Note that we do not use this with time expressions. We do not know specifically when these things happened; we only know that they happened in the past. We assume that these accomplishments happened in the recent past, but we cannot be sure.

What are some accomplishments of humanity that you can think of? Or perhaps some of your accomplishments. Tell us on our Facebook or Twitter pages and, of course, use the Present Perfect to express these accomplishments.

PRESENT PERFECT: CHANGE OVER TIME

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope your weekend was relaxing.

This week, we are focusing on some grammar and looking at the Present Perfect.

Remember that the Present Perfect uses this form:

HAS / HAVE + past participle

We have looked at this several times because this is a tense many students have questions about. Each day of this week, we will look at a different way we use the Present Perfect. Today we will look at using it for CHANGE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME

Example 1: People have become more aware of how bad drinking straws are for the environment.

Example 2: The government has begun looking at the long-term effects of some common prescription drugs.

We often use the word SINCE in these situations.

Example 3: Since we watched the documentary about the environment, we have started eating more organic foods.

Example 4: He has become more interested in literature and theatre since he took a class about Shakespeare.

That's all for today. Tomorrow we will look at another way to use the Present Perfect. Have a great day!
