TENSE TUESDAY: 'SO' + A 'THAT' CLAUSE

LISTEN TO THE DAILY VITAMIN HERE:

Good morning, everyone!

Last week for Tense Tuesday we looked at SO + ADVERB for extreme actions. An example is sentence 2 below:

Example 1: He runs quickly.

Example 2: He runs so quickly!

The addition of SO is for emphasis: in Example 2, the speaker is much more surprised by the runner's speed.

We can also use a SO + ADJECTIVE combination. With this, SO + ADJECTIVE is followed by a relative clause that begins with THAT

Example 1: He was so tired that he fell asleep while eating his dinner.

Example 2: I was so nervous that I couldn't eat.

Example 3: My Mom is so concerned that I'm working too hard.

If you don't remember what a RELATIVE CLAUSE is, check out our post on this subject:

That's all for today. I hope you are so inspired that you will continue learning English for the rest of the day! Or perhaps you have to work...
