HELL-3: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue with our expressions with hell. (Remember, although it is very common, the use of the word hell is offensive to some people.)

Today's expression is: to give somebody hell

Meaning 1
: to make life unpleasant for someone.

Example 1:
It's not uncommon for teenagers to give their parents hell. And teenagers generally feel that their parents are giving them hell too.

Example 2:
These new shoes are giving me hell. I think they are too small. They really hurt my feet!


Meaning 2: to shout or speak angrily to someone.

Example 3:
Oh no! You broke mom's favourite vase. She's going to give us hell when she sees it.
