HELL-1: meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope you had a relaxing weekend.

This week we are going to look at some expressions that use the swear word hell (swear word = palabrota). This word is used quite a bit in informal English; even amongst individuals who don't normally use other stronger swear words.

Today's expression is: all hell broke lose

Meaning
: when suddenly there is a lot of noise, arguing, fighting or confusion. One possible translation to Spanish would be se armó la gorda.

Example 1:
Police Office: What happened?
Witness (testigo): I don't know. There was a loud bang and then all hell broke loose!

Hell is translated into Spanish as infierno, but in colloquial language it is often used as an intensifier and can therefore be translated in many ways (for example, carajo). Remember, the use of this word is offensive to some people.

Example 2:
What the hell do you think are you doing? I just painted that door! Don't touch it!!
