TO PLAY IT BY EAR (REVISION): meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today's Daily Vitamin was originally sent in November of 2003. However, the other day I received a comment about today's expression from Narcís Ferrer, so I thought it would be a good idea to repeat it.

Today's expression is: To play it by ear

It means: To deal with a situation without having a clear plan; to improvise; to react to things as they happen.

Example:
Speaker 1: What do you want to do tonight?
Speaker 2: I don't know; we can just play it by ear.

This informal expression is used quite often in day to day conversation.
