SHOPPING (2): meaning and examples

Good morning,

Today we continue with names of places to shop.

Today's first word is: Shopping centre

It means: a large indoor complex of shops and other facilities. They are usually located on the town outskirts (las afueras).

Example 1:
Small businesses in the centre of town suffered a drop in earnings when the new shopping centre opened.

Today's second word is: Shopping mall

It means: the same as shopping centre, but is more common in the US and Australia.

Example 2:
A shopping mall in Dearborn, Michigan, wants to restrict teenagers after 5 p.m.

Cultural note: Mall rats is a colloquial expression used in the USA to describe teenagers who use the shopping mall as a place to meet and spend their free time. The 1982 movie, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, starring Sean Penn and Jennifer Jason Leigh, tells the story of a group of Californian mall rats.
