PHRASAL VERBS THROUGH SONGS: TOM PETTY 'I WON'T BACK DOWN': meaning and examples

This week we are focusing on songs: get ready to sing, and maybe dance! Get ready to learn some phrasal verbs, too. We are focusing on the phrasal verbs in some popular and classic songs. We are beginning with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the song "I Won’t Back Down." The phrasal verb is TO BACK DOWN

Definition: to retract your position during an argument or disagreement. 

Lyrics:
Well, I won’t back down 
No, I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down


Example 1: He backed down when he realized that he was wrong.

Example 2: The politician refuses to back down. He will continue to support the company that is polluting the environment. 

This phrasal verb is intransitive
